Porsche 944 Front Brake Rotors

Porsche 944 Brake Rotor Replacement

4-20-2002

(These directions are for a 1986 NA. Other years and models may not go exactly the same.)

Tools needed:

  • 19mm socket, to remove caliper.
  • 13mm sockets, to remove front rotors
  • 6mm allen key
  • Philips head screwdriver.
  • Optional: Hammer, because German cars sometimes require force.

Parts needed:

Steps, Front

  1. Remove wheel.
  2. Remove brake caliper (two 19mm bolts).  Gently set aside.
  3. Loosen allen head on spindle-nut. I think it is a 6mm.
  4. Unscrew spindle-nut and pull the hub assembly off.
  5. Unscrew five 13mm bolts holding rotor to hub. Whack rotor with hammer to free it.
  6. Bolt on new rotor.

Steps, Rear

  1. Remove wheel.
  2. Remove caliper (19mm).  Gently set aside.
  3. Remove two phillips screws on rotor (might be different on other then 1986 model year).
  4. Pull off rotor.
  5. While you are in there, spray the parking brake adjuster with WD-40. Some people say you shouldn't use WD-40 near brake pads, but what the heck.
  6. Push on new rotor.
  7. Do earlier steps in reverse.

When you are changing rotors you don't have to change the brake pads, but it's nice to do it anyway. I put these aussie-made PBR pads on. You can't go wrong if the box has a picture of a hopping' roo on it!
