Porsche 944 Brake Rotor Replacement
4-20-2002
(These directions are for a 1986 NA. Other years and models
may not go exactly the same.)
Tools needed:
- 19mm socket, to remove caliper.
- 13mm sockets, to remove front rotors
- 6mm allen key
- Philips head screwdriver.
- Optional: Hammer, because German cars sometimes require force.
Parts needed:
Steps, Front
- Remove wheel.
- Remove brake caliper (two 19mm bolts). Gently set aside.
- Loosen allen head on spindle-nut. I think it is a 6mm.
- Unscrew spindle-nut and pull the hub assembly off.
- Unscrew five 13mm bolts holding rotor to hub. Whack rotor with hammer to free it.
- Bolt on new rotor.
Steps, Rear
- Remove wheel.
- Remove caliper (19mm). Gently set aside.
- Remove two phillips screws on rotor (might be different on other then
1986 model year).
- Pull off rotor.
- While you are in there, spray the parking brake
adjuster with WD-40. Some people say you shouldn't
use WD-40 near brake pads, but what the heck.
- Push on new rotor.
- Do earlier steps in reverse.
When you are changing rotors you don't have to change the brake pads, but it's nice to do it anyway. I put these aussie-made PBR pads on. You can't go wrong if the box has a picture of a hopping' roo on it!
