Porsche 944 Shocks

Porsche 944 Rear Shock Replacement

10-2-2001

After 150,000 miles, it's time for new shocks.   I opted for KYB KG4544 Gas-a-Just Monotube Shock. When I got them, a pair costs about $75. Not much more expensive now.

Tools needed:

  • 19mm socket, to loosen top bolt.
  • 19mm wrench, to hold nut on back of top bolt.
  • 22mm socket, for bottom bolt.
  • Optional: Hammer, to bang on boltheads with (loosens 'em up!)

Steps

  1. Before removing any wheels, get under the car and break loose the lower bolts.  I used a long breaker bar and both feet.

  2. Remove wheel.

  3. Remove top bolt (19mm).  You'll have to prevent the nut from turning.  I used nylon ties to hold the box-end wrench in place (strapped it to the shock).  That leaves two hands for turning the breaker-bar.

  4. Remove bottom bolt (22mm).  After step 1, they should come loose easily.

  5. Shock comes right out.  Put new shock in.

  6. Repeat on other side of car.
